Forecasters predict that on Sunday afternoon the Sea of Marmara region will be affected by hurricane-force north and northeast winds up to 50-75 kilometers per hour, the authorities said.

The heaviest downpour in many months hit Istanbul on the night of Wednesday, September 6. Particularly affected were the areas of Arnavutköy and Basaksehir in the north of the province, as well as the area near the New Airport. Colossal traffic jams were recorded, flooding in the subway, shopping centers and parks, people were blocked in buildings.

According to the mayor of Istanbul, the authorities did not expect a downpour, during which 150 kilograms of rain per square meter immediately fell in a number of areas of the city. More than 2.1 thousand municipal employees worked on the liquidation of the consequences of the disaster. As a result of the incident, two people were killed and 12 others were injured.


On September 8, the South China Morning Post reported that at least 102 people were injured in a downpour in Hong Kong. It became the strongest in the history of observations since 1884. The city has declared the highest, black level of storm warning.
